MARGATE, NJ, -(Business Wire)-June 2, 1999 - GeneLink BioSciences, Inc. (OTC BB: GNLK-news)
announces the recognition of it's proprietary DNA Storage System by the
Federal Aviation Administration. As technological advances in genetic science
have made DNA a worldwide standard for identity verification, many experts
within the FAA and Department of Transportation recommend that individuals,
especially frequent travelers, store samples of their own DNA for emergency
identification purposes. As an innovator in confidential and guaranteed
DNA "banking", GeneLink offers the public an inexpensive resource.
GeneLink offers its services directly to the public at www.genelink.info.
Dennis Canfield, PhD, and Ronald Hansrote, MD recently published an article
in the Federal Air Surgeon's Medical Bulletin that discusses the benefits
of DNA banking for identification purposes. Dr. Canfield and Dr. Hansrote
are managers with the FAA's Civil Aeromedical Institute. According to Dr.'s
Canfield and Hansrote, "To identify individuals by DNA analysis, one must
have a reference DNA sample This reference sample could be DNA collected
from the individual prior to an accident or DNA specimens collected from
immediate family members such as biological mother, father, siblings, and
children."
"However, collecting reference samples from family members after
a fatal accident is difficult „ For a small fee, commercial DNA storage
is now available for individuals to "bank" their DNA for later use
in personal identification. Certified laboratories (e.g. GeneLink)
can store DNA samples for up to 20 years. DNA sample collection kits
are available, are simple to use, are non-invasive, and the DNA can
be collected without medical assistance. Insurance companies will
sometimes pay for storing DNA samples."
