GeneLink BioSciences, Inc. ANNOUNCES THE FILING OF U.S. PATENT APPLICATION FOR SNPS
BASED METHOD TO DETECT SUSCEPTIBILITY TO CONNECTIVE TISSUE BREAKDOWN AND
SKIN AGING
October 30, 2001
MARGATE, NJ - (Business Wire) - October 30, 2001 - The World's First Family
Centered DNA Bank and Hereditary Genetic Information Service, today announced
that it has filed a patent application through the Philadelphia office
of international law firm - Akin, Gump, Struass, Hauer & Feld. L.L.P.,
for a proprietary genetic test that predicts an individual's susceptibility
to conditions that lead to accelerated skin aging and connective tissue
breakdown.
In this newly filed patent, GeneLink's oxidative stress profile not only
measures an individual's inherent ability to defend against oxidative stress,
it also examines a variant of this gene in which oxidative stress can greatly
increase susceptibility to connective tissue breakdown and premature skin
aging. Consumers can be easily tested for the genetic variation by utilizing
GeneLink's patented oral home swab kit and mailing it to GeneLink's labs
for evaluation. Based on GeneLink's proprietary genetic test, specifically
formulated skin care products that block oxidative stress can be used to
reduce expression of this variant gene and retard skin aging.
GeneLink is collaborating with a major skin care formulator and
raw ingredient supplier to produce products that alleviate oxidative
stress and other age related deficiencies in the skin. On September
24th, Arch Chemicals' (NYSE: ARJ) Personal Care Unit and GeneLink
announced that they entered into a strategic partnership to develop
such products based on a consumer's genetic makeup. Arch Personal
Care Products, L.P., a business unit with Arch's Treatment Products
business segment, sells a variety of unique products to businesses
in the cosmetics and toiletries arena, an approximately $40 billion
US retail market (May 14, 2001 Chemical Market Reporter).
"The use of genetic information from GeneLink's profiles will have
a tremendous application in the skincare industry," say's John R
DePhillipo, Chairman and CEO of GeneLink, "This adds to GeneLink's
expanding arsenal of proprietary genetic profile tests and will result
in the development of some remarkable new products to help people
combat skin aging. We anticipate new products could be ready for
worldwide distribution in the early part of 2002," adds DePhillipo.
